The UK’s Centre of Excellence for ITS, innovITS, held the first workshop of its facITS project on the development of an initial classification scheme for ITS applications and functions on 2 September 2008. The facITS project, which stands for Framework Architecture and Classification for Intelligent Transportation Systems, aims to “identify common ITS functions and show how the use of classification schemes can facilitate sharing of functions and components”.
The facITS initial classification scheme is a qualitative risk assessment that considers the threats to ITS applications, their causes, and both the frequency and severity of the consequences of the threats. The key focus is on the required level of data integrity along various data paths from “source to consumption”.
Standards already exist in the process industries, such as IEC 61508, that consider Safety Integrity Levels (SILs), however the facITS project is ITS-specific and as well as safety implications consequences may be financial, privacy, security, or convenience-related.
The facITS programme consists of a core project team and will run a series of ITS Knowledge Transfer Networks (KTN) workshops, organised by InnovITS, supporting the project development. The workshops aim to bring together key players across industry including system developers, purchasers and operators in order to develop an industry-wide consensus.
The facITS website contains the presentations from the first workshop along with a discussion forum. The detailed online content is only available to members of the ITS KTN, however registration is free.
ITS Radar International will monitor future workshops
