The EC-supported IP PReVENT project held an open workshop 6 February 2007 where its achievements to date were presented and discussed. The project, which is developing, testing and spreading awareness of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for improved road safety, benefited from a workshop audience of representatives from the automotive industry, research institutes, public authorities and the European Commission.
Presentations highlighted, among other things, the role of IP PReVENT in the EC’s Intelligent Car Initiative, its added-value to EC projects and lessons learned over the course of the project’s life so far.
Discussions also centred around the concerns of future research needs, ADAS field operational tests, a Code of Practice and market introduction. Integrated ADAS was a hot topic from the research point of view, with many questions on the perception platform, the coordination of decisions and the interaction with the driver. Other aspects of ADAS contributing not only to safety but also to traffic flow, energy consumption and environment were raised with strong support from the European Commission.
The event ended with a panel discussion moderated by Michael Nielsen (ERTICO – ITS Europe) with Fabrizio Minarini (DG INFSO), Matthias Schulze (DaimlerChrysler AG), Uwe-Kaiser Dieckhoff (Robert Bosch GmbH), and Michel Parent (INRIA) giving their interpretations of the next steps after IP PReVENT.
All workshop participants were invited to play a part in the upcoming IP PReVENT Exhibition, 18-22 September 2007, organised with i2010 Intelligent Car Initiative & eSafety Forum, in Versailles, France.
Up to 23 vehicles - including two trucks - will run preventive and active safety demonstrations on test tracks, while simulators will support the illustration of the applications in a large exhibition village. This event also offers an opportunity to meet many of the experts behind the IP PReVENT research.
