The Fourth Call for Proposals under the European Commission’s Information and Communications Technologies Research Programme was issued on 19th November 2008 and closes on 1st April 2009.
Under Challenge 6.1 ‘ICT for mobility, environmental sustainability and energy efficiency’, the European Commission is calling for proposals on the following topics of particular relevance to the Highways Agency:
o ICT for Intelligent Vehicle Systems: in-vehicle safety systems supporting autonomous driving; new approaches to crash avoidance and collision reduction; human machine interface design principles; advanced methods for traffic situation detection and communications; technologies for data security and privacy of in-vehicle applications; methods for design and evaluation of systems including under real world conditions
o ICT for clean efficient mobility: includes new tools, systems and services supporting energy-efficient driving based on on-board systems and or cooperative infrastructure and energy-optimised adaptive traffic control; methods for assessing the impact of advanced ICTs in energy efficiency and CO2 reduction aimed at international harmonisation and standardisation of methodologies through cooperation with Japan and the USA
o Coordination and support actions: a common research agenda for energy efficiency by enhancing international cooperation; increase user awareness and dissemination of research results by supporting the Intelligent Car Initiative and the eSafety Forum, by supporting standardisation and by preparing a common showcase for cooperative systems.
Under Challenge 6.2 ‘ICT for mobility of the future’ there are calls for:
o Field Operational Tests for integrated safety systems and cooperative systems: including large scale test programmes for comprehensive assessment of close to market systems covering user acceptance, performance and benefits for safety and efficiency of both autonomous on-board and cooperative systems
o ICT-based systems and services for smart urban mobility and new mobility concepts, including demand management, urban logistics and ICT for replacing mobility
o Coordination and support actions in the framework of the Intelligent Car initiative including assessments of socio-economic impacts
o International cooperation: task forces for cooperation with Japan and the USA to exchange information and mutual validation and exploitation of programme results.
